Baptisms

Baptism of a child

Baptism marks the beginning of your child's journey of faith. In baptism parents are able to thank God for the gift of their child and to ask the church for support in nurturing them on their journey of faith.

Baptisms at St. Mary's generally take place on the 4th Sunday of the month at 4.00p.m. The service lasts about 40 minutes and it is likely there will be other families also having their children baptised at the same time. To book a baptism you will need to call into the church office at St. Mary's between 6.00p.m. and 7.00p.m. on a Wednesday evening. A member of the clergy will be present to talk with you about the baptism of your child and make the necessary arrangements. If you live in the parish of St. Mary Portsea or if you are on the Electoral Roll of the parish then there is no problem with arranging a baptism at St. Mary's. If you live outside the area a letter from your own parish priest will be required.

Baptisms at the daughter churches of St. Faith and St. Wilfrid can be made either through the church office on a Wednesday evening or with the priest attached to those churches directly. Times for these services are generally at 11.30p.m. on a Sunday to suit families preferences.

Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child

An alternative to having your baby baptised is to have a service of "Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child". In this service, you thank God for the gift of your child and your child is blessed by the priest. You and your child’s sponsors do not make the same promises as in the Baptism service and it is possible for your child to be baptised at a later date. To book a service of "Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child" call in to the parish office in St. Mary’s vestry hall on a Wednesday evening between 6.00p.m. and 7.00p.m.. Services at our daughter churches of St. Wilfrid’s or St. Faith’s. can also be booked here or arranged separately with the priests at the daughter churches.
