A Farewell Service for Fr Rajiv
Join us as we thank Fr Rajiv for his curacy at St Mary’s, say farewell to him, and wish him well in his future ministry in Pontypridd. Tea and cake will be served at 3pm, before a service at 4pm. St Mary’s May Fayre
Join us again for our annual May Fayre! As always this is a great opportunity for our local Portsmouth community to gather in our churchyard, with local stalls, the beer tent, and a variety of performances in our arena, including traditional Morris Dancing

Haydn’s Creation by The University of Portsmouth Choir
The University of Portsmouth Choir presents: Haydn’s Creation in a new version with words by Anne Hunter, edited and directed by Prof. George Burrows. Includes the world premiere of ‘A Song for Eve’ by Gayathri Khemadasa. Featuring Havant Symphony Orchestra, Ciara White (soprano), Edward Goater (tenor) and Karl Nordensten (bass-baritone). Tickets cost £19 per person, with a concession ticket costing £15 or a student ticket costing £8, and can be bought from The University of Portsmouth’s website.
A Big Brekkie for Christian Aid

Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, performed by the Portsmouth Choral Union
Join the Portsmouth Choral Union for a performance as they perform Requiem, op. 9, by Maurice Duruflé, inspired by 20th century wartime France. This performance will be conducted by David Gostick, with Ian Richardson as organist and Faye Eldret as soprano. There will also be performances of Parry’s I Was Glad, Handel’s Zadok the Priest, Mendelssohn’s Hear My Prayer, and Elgar’s Give Unto the Lord. Music Foundation Concert Series – James Fellows
The next Music Foundation Organ Recital will be given by James Fellows, Assistant Organist at Radley College, Oxford. James is very much looking forward to playing the Organ at St Mary’s, with a recital featuring music by Byrd, Stanford, Whitlock, and Howells. Entry is free, with a retiring collection in aid of the Music Foundation, which supports young people in Portsmouth by providing musical education and opportunities.

Festival Choral Evensong
As part of St Mary’s Church’s Celebration of Music and Heritage, there will be a Festival Choral Evensong celebrating the works of Charles Stanford as we mark the centenary of his death. Sung by the choir of St Mary’s Portsea, and guests, music will include Stanford’s arrangements of Psalm 150, Canticles, and Beati Quorum Via. The service will be open to all, beginning at 4.30pm.
Heritage Workshop – St Mary’s Church’s Celebration of Music and Heritage
As part of St Mary’s Church’s Celebration of Music and Heritage, we’re holding a series of heritage workshops for local schools. These provide an opportunity to teach people about the organ, how it works, as well as the variety of sounds we can make with it and the methods of doing so. This session will be the only one open to the general public, so do come along for an informative and fun experience!
Music Foundation Concert Series – Geoffrey Morgan
As part of St Mary’s Church’s Celebration of Music and Heritage, the next Music Foundation Organ Recital will be given by Geoffrey Morgan. Geoffrey was a former Assistant Organist at Westminster Abbey and Visiting Professor of Organ at Yale University, and is currently the organist at Christchurch Priory. Mo’Jive Tea Dance – Celebration of Music and Heritage
As part of St Mary’s Church’s Celebration of Music and Heritage, we are hosting an afternoon of dance and music, inspired by late Victorian dance halls. Strawberry Tea with Music and Tower Opening
To conclude our Celebration of Music and Heritage, come and enjoy an afternoon of music, strawberry tea, and (hopefully) sun. St Mary’s Picnic Lunch and Rounders
After our 10am church service, bring your picnics, blankets, drinks and trainers as we join together for a Parish picnic, followed by a fun (and optional) game of rounders in the churchyard. Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult.
Young Musicians Annual Music Foundation Concert
Join us for our Annual Music Foundation Concert, an opportunity for our local young musicians to demonstrate the extraordinary skills they’ve been developing. This concert is FREE, with the option to make donations towards St Mary’s Music Foundation, a charity which supports the musical development of local children.
‘Once a Sea’ Photo Submissions
Wanted: Photo Memories of St Mary’s Church, Fratton As part of the Portsmouth We Shine Light Festival (stay tuned for more details this November), and in partnership with Fratton Together, Anna Heinrich & Leon Palmer have been commissioned to make a new artwork called ‘Once a Sea’. Anna & Leon are hoping to work with and use a variety of community photographs of St Mary’s Church, especially those of special, memorable, or important occasions at, or memories of, the church.…
Sports Summer Activities at St Mary’s
For those aged 6-12, looking for something to do this summer, we are offering FREE sports activities on Thursdays (25th July; 1st, 22nd, 29th August). A chance to be social, have fun, and stay healthy, activities will include games such as football, rounders, & dodgeball. Please note, parents MUST stay for the duration of the morning.
Parish Skittles Night
Join us for another instalment in our annual Skittles Night competitions! Alongside getting involved in a fun activity (and attempting to beat the clergy), this event is always a great chance to have a chat with other members of the parish. St Faith’s Coffee Morning for Eco Church

The Feast of the Assumption & Patronal Festival

Fairtrade Service
This year Fairtrade is celebrating thirty years of the Fairtrade Mark in Britain, and Portsmouth is celebrating 25 years of being a Fairtrade city. To celebrate this and mark the beginning of the Fairtrade Fortnight, we will be hosting a special service with Cllr Hugh Mason as the guest speaker, followed by Fairtrade refreshments.
Tower Opening
We will once again be opening St Mary’s Tower for the general public to climb. As well as providing an insight into the inside of this tower and its iconic bells, this 206-step journey provides stunning views across Portsmouth. The last climb will be at 3.30pm. Join Fratton Together in celebrating the local Fratton community, with a collection of stalls, refreshments, music, children’s rides, activities, a picnic area, and more – all in St Mary’s Churchyard! Messy Harvest
Join us as we celebrate Harvest with a series of FREE fun activities designed for young families that reflect on the world God has created, its beauty, and the food that we enjoy. We will also be considering how we can help care for the world and fairly share its gifts with others. There is no need to book, just turn up!
Harvest Thanksgiving & BBQ
Join us next Sunday as we celebrate God’s gift of the world and its fruits, as well as reflect on how we can be grateful for these blessings and share them with others. We encourage you to bring donations of non-perishable food which can be passed out to those in need in our local community, through the Roberts Centre.
